On a Tuesday morning, someone left a key on Platform 9.
Not on purpose.
Just one of those things โ coat pocket, rush, the train doors closing, the key staying behind.
It sat on the bench.
Brass. A little worn. On a keyring that said: Don’t Panic.
And waited to see what would happen next. ๐๏ธ
๐๏ธ First Finder: The Woman Who Was Lost
A woman named Ruth sat down on the bench and felt something cold under her hand.
The key.
She picked it up and looked at the keyring.
Don’t Panic.
Ruth had been panicking since six that morning.
New job today. First day. She was forty-three and starting over and her stomach had been a knot since she woke up.
Don’t Panic.
She held the key all the way to her new office.
She left it on the desk of the next person who needed it, with a note: Found this on Platform 9. It helped me. Pass it on if you don’t know who it belongs to.
๐๏ธ Second Finder: The Boy Who Was Angry
The next person at the desk was a boy waiting while his mother had a meeting.
He was angry. He wanted to be somewhere else. He didn’t know where. Just not here.
He picked up the key and read the note.
Don’t Panic.
He sat with that for a while.
He wasn’t panicking. He was just angry.
But somehow the key was still useful.
It fit in his palm and had a weight to it, and he held it while he waited and the anger went from a roar to a simmer.
He left it on the seat of the bus, with the note.
๐ Last Finder: Victoria
Victoria found the key on the bus seat.
Read the note.
Read it again.
Victoria had been worried about something.
Not a new-job worried or an angry worried.
Just the regular, ambient, something-might-go-wrong worried that sometimes settled in like weather.
Don’t Panic.
Victoria carried the key to Platform 9.
Handed it to the lost property office.
“Someone might come back for it,” said Victoria.
“They usually do,” said the man behind the counter.
Victoria walked back to the platform.
Thought about the woman who started over at forty-three.
The boy who sat with his anger until it quieted.
The key that had said one simple thing to all of them.
Don’t Panic.
Victoria took a breath.
Okay.
Not panicking.
The train came. ๐๏ธ
