Once upon a time, on a rocky little island at the edge of the sea, there lived a lighthouse named Lumi.
Lumi had one very important job.
Shining her light so ships could find their way home. 🌊
But Lumi had a secret.
A very embarrassing secret for a lighthouse to have.
Lumi was afraid of the dark.
“I know, I know,” she whispered to the seagulls. “A lighthouse who is scared of the dark. It’s silly.”
The seagulls didn’t think it was silly.
But Lumi did.
Every evening, when the sky turned purple and the stars started to wake up, Lumi would squeeze her eyes shut and tremble all the way down to her foundation stones.
And her light would flicker.
Flicker. Flicker. Flicker.
⛵ A Boat in Trouble
One stormy night, the clouds were very thick and very black.
The wind howled like something hungry. 🌩️
The waves crashed and foamed and leapt up the rocks.
Out on the water, a little fishing boat was being tossed this way and that.
The sailor inside was frightened.
He could not see the rocks.
He could not see the shore.
He could not see anything at all.
He needed a light.
He needed Lumi.
But Lumi had her eyes shut tight.
“I can’t,” she shivered. “It’s too dark. It’s too big. I’m too small.”
🌟 Someone Stands on the Shore
Down on the rocky beach, wrapped in a yellow raincoat, stood Elizabeth.
Elizabeth had come to watch the storm from the shore.
Elizabeth loved storms.
Not because they were scary, but because they were so wonderfully loud and wild and alive.
Then Elizabeth saw the little boat, far out in the dark water.
And Elizabeth looked up at Lumi.
The light was flickering. Weak and wobbly and afraid.
Elizabeth understood something right away.
“She’s scared,” said Elizabeth quietly.
Elizabeth cupped both hands around their mouth.
“LUMI!” Elizabeth shouted over the roaring wind. “OPEN YOUR EYES! I’M RIGHT HERE!”
Lumi heard a voice through the storm.
Small. But certain.
She opened one eye.
Just a little.
Just a crack.
💛 You Are Not Alone
There on the beach stood Elizabeth, waving both arms in the rain.
Not running away.
Not hiding.
Just standing there. Steady. Watching. Waiting.
“I’m here!” Elizabeth called again. “You’re not alone, Lumi! Shine for the boat! I’ll be right here the whole time!”
Lumi looked at Elizabeth.
Then she looked at the dark.
The dark was still dark.
It hadn’t become less dark.
But somehow, with Elizabeth standing there on the shore, the dark felt smaller.
Lumi took a deep breath all the way down to her stones.
And she opened her eye wide.
Her light burst out — bright and golden and strong — spinning round and round and round across the black water. 💛
Flash. Flash. Flash.
⚓ Home Safe
Out on the water, the sailor saw the light.
“There!” he cried. “The lighthouse! I can find my way!”
He steered away from the rocks.
He followed Lumi’s golden beam all the way into the harbour.
Safe.
Warm.
Home.
The storm began to settle.
The clouds parted just a little, and three shy stars peeked through.
Lumi kept her light on.
Spinning, spinning, spinning.
She found that once she had started, it wasn’t as hard to keep going.
The dark was still there.
But she was shining anyway. ✨
🌅 Morning Comes
When the sun rose pink and gold over the sea, Elizabeth was still on the beach.
Wet boots. Cold nose. Very happy.
“You did it, Lumi,” said Elizabeth.
“I was still scared,” Lumi admitted. “The whole time. I was scared the whole time.”
Elizabeth nodded slowly.
“I know,” said Elizabeth. “But you did it anyway. That’s what brave is.”
Lumi had never thought about it like that.
She had always thought brave meant not being scared.
But maybe brave meant doing the important thing even when your light wanted to flicker.
Even when the dark felt very big.
Even when your stones were trembling.
The sailor came down to the harbour that morning and looked out at the little lighthouse on the rocks.
He waved.
Lumi flashed her light twice, just for him.
Elizabeth laughed.
“I think you just made a friend,” said Elizabeth.
“I think I made two,” said Lumi.
