The Anglerfish Who Lit the Way

Full Story

Once upon a time, in the deepest, darkest part of the ocean โ€” so deep that no sunshine ever reached โ€” there lived an anglerfish named Luma.

From a long stalk on her forehead hung a small glowing orb.

Glow. Glow. Glow.

It never turned off.

Luma found it embarrassing.

“You look like a lamp,” said a passing shrimp.

“I know,” said Luma.

“A very small lamp.”

“I know,” said Luma.

“With a wonky shade.”

“Thank you,” said Luma, “I know.” ๐Ÿ”ฆ

๐ŸŒŠ Lost in the Dark

The deep ocean was a confusing place.

No light.
No landmarks.
Just dark in every direction.

A young squid named Inkle had been lost for three whole days.

He was drifting.
Too afraid to move.
Too tired to call for help.

And then he saw something.

A tiny warm glow, bobbing gently in the dark.

Glow. Glow. Glow.

“Hello?” said Inkle. “Is someone there?”

“It’s just me,” said Luma. “The lamp.”

“You’re the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen,” said Inkle.

Luma didn’t know what to say to that.

๐Ÿ’› Follow My Light

“Follow my light,” said Luma. And she swam.

Along the way they found a confused shrimp going in circles.
Circle. Circle. Circle.

A seahorse who had been spinning in place for hours.
Spin. Spin. Spin.

Two tiny lanternfish who had lost their own glow from fright.

“Follow my light,” said Luma, every time.

And they did.

โœจ William and the Warmest Glow

William was reading a book about the deep ocean and saw a picture of an anglerfish.

“That one looks funny,” said William.

Then William read what anglerfish do.

How their light guides lost creatures through the darkest places.
How the stranger the light, the further it can be seen.
How Luma once led seventeen lost creatures home in a single night.

William looked at the picture again.

“Actually,” said William, “I think she’s wonderful.”

And far away in the deep ocean, Luma’s orb glowed a little brighter.

Because being seen โ€” really seen โ€” does that. โœจ
