The Cloud That Came Down to Rest

Full Story

One September morning, a cloud landed on a mountain ledge and did not get up.

Just settled.
Puffed out.
Layered herself over the rocks like a very large, very damp blanket.

Hmmmph.

“You can’t stay there,” said a passing eagle. “That’s a ledge. For standing on. Not for clouds.”

“I’m tired,” said the cloud.

“Clouds don’t get tired.”

“This one does,” said the cloud, and settled more firmly. โ˜๏ธ

๐Ÿ”๏ธ Three Days

She stayed.

Day one, the hikers were confused.

Fog on the ledge path. Very thick. Very stubborn.

Day two, the mountain tried to reason with her.

“You’re blocking the view,” said the mountain.

“I know. I don’t need a view. I AM the view.”

“That’s fair,” said the mountain.

Day three, it rained from her โ€” just gently โ€” because she was so full of water she couldn’t help it.

Patter. Patter. Patter.

The ledge flowers drank it up.

“Oh,” said the mountain, a little surprised. “Thank you.”

“You’re welcome,” said the cloud, also a little surprised.

โ˜๏ธ What the Mountain Loves

That evening the mountain told her about the visitors.

Hikers who came from far away just to see the view.
Children who pressed their faces against the rock and looked out across the valley.
An old man who came every year on his birthday and stood at the edge and cried, happily.

“Why does he cry?” asked the cloud.

“Because it’s so big,” said the mountain. “Because the world is so big and he is so glad to be in it.”

The cloud thought about this for a long time.

๐Ÿ’› Matthew in the Mist

Matthew came up the path on day four and found the ledge wrapped in a soft, warm mist.

Not dark fog. More like walking inside something gentle.

Matthew stood at the edge of the ledge and couldn’t see the valley โ€” just white and soft and quiet.

But then the mist parted, just for a moment, just enough.

The whole valley. Golden morning. The river like a thread of light.

And then the mist closed again.

Like a curtain between shows.

Matthew waited.

It parted again.

Oh.

Behind Matthew, the cloud smiled โ€” if clouds can smile, and this one could โ€” and lifted herself, slowly, from the ledge.

Back into the sky.

Rested.

And glad she’d stayed long enough to understand why the mountain loved its visitors. โ˜๏ธ

Today's Lesson
Rest is not wasted time. And sometimes, staying in one place long enough is how you understand why it matters.
