The black hole had a problem.

Everything it wanted, it destroyed.

Not on purpose.

Just โ€” it pulled things close, and close was too close, and then they were gone.

The stars kept their distance.
The planets swung wide arcs to stay away.
Even the light โ€” the light that nothing else could escape โ€” bent sharply around it and kept moving, not stopping, never staying.

The black hole pulled and pulled and everything it pulled became part of it.

And still it was alone. ๐ŸŒ‘

๐ŸŒŒ What It Couldn’t Have

Once there had been a star nearby.

Close enough.

The black hole had wanted very much to be near the star.

And so it pulled.

Just a little.

And the star got closer.

A little more.

Closer still.

Until the star came apart in a long bright spiral around the black hole’s edge and was gone.

The black hole had not meant to.

But it had.

It always did.

“I don’t know how to want things gently,” said the black hole, to no one. “I only know how to pull.”

๐ŸŒ‘ The Brave Photon

A photon came by.

A single particle of light, moving as light always moves.

It felt the pull of the black hole.

The pull that meant: come closer, closer, too close, gone.

The photon slowed.

Every photon who ever came close went one of two ways: escape or gone.

But this one found a third way.

The edge. The exact orbit where the pull and the speed balanced perfectly.

Not close enough to fall. Not far enough to flee.

Right there.

“Hello,” said the photon, circling.

The black hole said nothing for a long moment.

“You’re not leaving?”

“I’m orbiting,” said the photon. “There’s a difference.”

๐Ÿ’› John Learns About the Edge

John was reading about black holes when the teacher explained photon spheres.

The exact distance where light can orbit a black hole.

Not captured. Not free. Balanced.

“So light can stay near a black hole,” said John, “without being destroyed?”

“If it finds exactly the right distance,” said the teacher.

John looked at the diagram.

At the photon sphere. The ring of light around the dark.

The thing that stayed without being consumed.

The thing that was near without being lost.

John wrote in the margin: Some things can only be loved from the right distance.

The teacher read it and didn’t correct it.

Because it was true. ๐ŸŒ‘
