The Manta Ray Who Flew Underwater

๐Ÿฆ…
๐Ÿ“– Full Story
Full Story

Every night, Maya pressed herself against the surface of the ocean and gazed up at the sky.

Birds up there.

Pelicans. Frigates. Gulls.

Wheeling. Soaring. Dipping on invisible rivers of air.

Free.

Maya spread her great wings โ€” which were actually fins, but she preferred to think of them as wings โ€” and swept them up and down.

She rose a little.

She sank again.

“Not the same,” she said sadly. “Not the same at all.” ๐ŸŒŠ

๐ŸŒŠ The Seagull’s Surprise

A seagull landed on the water one morning and watched Maya trying.

Sweep. Sink. Sweep. Sink.

“What are you doing?” asked the seagull.

“Trying to fly,” said Maya. “Like you.”

The seagull tilted its head.

“But you already do fly. I’ve been watching you from above.”

Maya blinked.

“What do you mean?”

“From up there,” said the seagull, “you look like a great dark bird. Rising. Wheeling. Soaring. What do you call that, if not flying?”

Maya had never thought about what she looked like from above.

โœจ Seen from the Sky

“You rise on the currents,” said the seagull. “I rise on the wind. You bank left, I bank left. You spiral up, I spiral up.”

“But you’re in the sky,” said Maya.

“And you’re in yours,” said the seagull simply.

It ruffled its feathers and flew away.

Maya floated there for a long time.

๐Ÿฆ… Nora Sees It Too

Nora was on a boat when the shadow passed beneath.

Huge. Silent. Moving in long, slow arcs.

Wings โ€” fins โ€” spread wide, banking through the blue water like a bird through blue sky.

“It’s flying,” said Nora, quietly. “It’s actually flying.”

And far below, Maya banked left.

Then right.

Then spiralled upward in a long, joyful sweep.

She had been flying all along.

The ocean was her sky.

And it was infinite. ๐ŸŒŠ
